Student testimonials

"I was in your BIO281 lecture on Monday and Wednesday at 4:35 PM. I wanted to take the time to write you this email to thank you. You were my favorite professor this semester and I always looked forward to coming in and seeing you (and your dog on the projector). You are so passionate about biology and youreally helped me find my passion for it as well. I may not find ants as interesting as you, but you truly opened my eyes to what biology is really about. It isn't just about humans, but about the whole world. Thank you for always being encouraging and treating me and my fellow students like your colleagues. It was very pleasant having a professor who had my best interests in mind and who wasn't trying to dominate their power over the class. I wish I could fit one of your class times into my schedule for BIO282, but next semester is packed for me. Anyways, thank you for a great semester Jessie and thank you for being a great role model for me. I hope to be as dedicated about my career as you are one day."

"AMAZING! Never have I had such a fun class where I actually learned. This class actually teaches you conceptually. I never had to cram for a quiz or exam. I can confidently say I learned applicable information here."

"One aspect that was great about this course was the use of active learning. This helped me a lot because it made me understand the concepts more as well as maintaining the ideology"

"If I could rate Jessie a 20/10,  I TOTALLY would. She is an AMAZING instructor and I looked forward to coming to her class. She made me feel more like her colleague than her student. I wish that I could fit her class into my schedule next semester for Bio 282. I HIGHLY recommend her to ALL future students. She was my favorite professor this year and I have a feeling that I will be coming to her in the future if I ever need any help!! She made me more passionate about my degree and really opened my eyes to a lot of things."

"Jessie was very helpful in getting to know me on a personal level when I was struggling in other aspects of my life. She was super helpful when I was having a rough day in class and she pulled me out of class and gave me resources to contact for anything I needed as well as an extension on a class assignment that I was missing. She is very caring about her students and wants them all to try hard and do their best as well as wanting them to succeed."

"I liked that we sat in groups and there were computers right in front of us that gave us opportunities to easily discuss the questions being asked amongst ourselves and even look it up if needed. I like how organized this course was because, since day one, there was a course schedule that gave us what will be happening every class, what assignments will be due, what cogbooks reading relates to the lecture being taught, and if we have lab and was it's about. I also like that we had an option to take an exam retake."

–ASU Introductory biology (Bio 281) student, Fall 2019

"I loved how we had to learn it on our own first via cogbooks and then it went over again in class. At first, I felt like I was not learning anything but in time I proved myself wrong. It really helped cement everything I learned in my mind. I also really loved the retakes on tests. It made me feel less anxious."

–ASU Introductory biology (Bio 281) student, Fall 2019

"I loved how approachable Jessie was as she was very conversational with us and not intimidating, which helped us as students to easily approach her with any questions without being scared or intimidated of her responses."

"Jessie has a special way of teaching that I wish all other professors would adopt. She respects everyone's opinions and really pushes us to think. All of the material was intriguing and thoroughly explained. I loved all of the different activities we did! I cannot wait to take her courses again in the future!"

"Thank you for teaching me this class and for always being so helpful. I really enjoyed this class, and I especially liked how I could always ask you or one of the TAs for help. It really gave me peace of mind that I've never had in other online courses. "

"This professor could explain anything to anyone. I am impressed by how well she can connect with other people."

–ASU Introductory biology (Bio 281) student, Spring 2019

"I love the way in which the professors motivated students to speak, especially with the catch box microphone. I also love how involved and genuine they are as people; I never felt afraid to ask a question, even if I wanted to approach them one on one.."

"By building personal connections with students and knowing most of their names, Jessie makes participation exciting rather than a drag, helping class flow and be more engaging. She is so empathetic and approachable via email and in person. I believe this is her first time teaching BIO331, and she is AMAZING. I hope that she maintains this class in her normal rotation of courses because she made the class worthwhile, encouraging me and others to learn. Keep her on this course!Focus on designing experiments to collect qualitative behavior data is different from the class setup of any other BIO course I've taken so far, reminds me of BIO361 (Physio lab), which helps students grasp concepts and take ownership of their ideas. Jessie is amazing"

"I liked being able to hear other students' opinions and how they conceptualized and solved problems posed by the teacher."

"Muddiest points! It's so helpful to be able to tell your professor what you didn't understand in order for them to go back and clarify!"

"Not your average class where you sit and listen to a dry lecture. Prof. Ebie interacts with the class and makes sure we interact with each other. She provides a very fun and interesting class. She does everything she can to ensure everyone understands the concepts and even makes funny videos to provide alternative approaches. Will be recommending her to other students."

"Very well organized and based in previous studies as examples of concepts. Seemingly intuitive subject, but the content can be difficult with just the textbook. Projects help to reinforce in-class learning. Course is challenging but very motivating due to discussion-based format. Many classes have "in class discussions" but participation is low, and no one actually talks to the person next to them. In BIO331, though, the teaching team makes it really easy and important to discuss with others, and it's a great, healthy environment to learn with others, no recitation needed (much more effective than a recitation in my opinion)."

"The BioBlitz project has been so eye opening and has really made me appreciate what it’s like to take time out of the day and focus on other things in the world. Again thank you so much for assisting me with finding the species, but also for all of your dedication to us students."

"I am prepping for the MCAT and taking it in September and there are A LOT of research article passages contained on the test. Participating in the reading groups with you and the others has proven to be been very helpful. Those were my first times really reading research articles from start to finish and I would just like to thank you for getting that going for me. I am more confident reading these passages on the MCAT practice exams than I would have been if this were my first time seeing these types of passages. Joining the lab under your mentorship has helped me more than I imagined."

" I would really like to thank you for assisting me through this time. I’ve never had a professor or teacher worry about my well-being. Thank you for making a difference in my life!"

"The best aspects were doing the in class activities because it made me put the things I learned into action."

–ASU Biological thinking (Bio 151) student, Fall 2016

"Jessie was an amazing instructor for this course. I think she did well to get us interested and focus on the topics especially since the class was in the morning. She answered all my questions or did her best to help me with whatever I needed. She helped me get in contact with many professors to get in a lab. I really would like to thank her because without her I probably wouldn't be where I am working at a lab today. I loved that Professor Ebie always ensured that we understood the concept, and when we didn't, she'd thoroughly explain it"

"Kept the students engaged in every topic, and was always walking around the class, talking to each group during the active learnings. Really helped me learn the course material and it was nice because she learned students names and began making connections with them. Fantastic job teaching!"
